Historical Background:

In accordance with mid-19th century court procedures, all Naturalization Papers (i.e.Declarations of Intention and Petitions for Naturalization)  filed with the Clerk of the Court were transcribed and recorded in a register beginning c. 1856 and continuing until procedures and formats were revised in 1906.

Description of Record Series:

Bound volumes (approximately 12 x 18") containing a handwritten transciption of applicant's Declaration of Intention (initial papers) and Petition (final papers) as filed with the Clerk of the Court in the Office of the County Clerk; separate and self-contained indexes provide name and volume and/or page number.  OCA Schedule # 21020.
 

Purpose of Record:

Defined as being the public record of Declarations of Intentions and Petitions filed with the Clerk of the Court in the Office of the County Clerk.

Other Formats:  Naturalization Papers for period 1856-1906 replicate information contained within
 bound volumes (although not all papers may be found).
